Forest mycorrhizal dominance depends on historical land use and nitrogen‐fixing trees

چکیده
Abstract Most forests are recovering from human land use, making it critical to understand the effect of disturbance on forest recovery. Forests eastern United States have a long history but is unknown whether historical disturbances contributed their transition ectomycorrhizal (ECM) arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) tree dominance. Disturbance may promote nitrogen (N)‐fixing trees in early succession, which can elevate soil N availability even after they die. Higher facilitate competitive success AM over ECM trees, such ‘N fixer founder effects’ not been empirically tested. Here, we analysed data three land‐use temperate historically dominated by trees: selective‐cutting (ranging 0 52 m 2 ha −1 ), clear‐cutting and agricultural abandonment. These occurred at different times, long‐term capture 3–7 decades We found that fraction contemporary was 2, 4, 6‐fold higher following selective‐cutting, abandonment, respectively, compared composition 1934. Across these also observed an increasing abundance black locust immediately disturbance. Using simulation model parameterized locust, estimated rates symbiotic fixation relationship between dominance individual plots. positively associated with growth generally, oak hickory specifically, only light (<12 or <18 basal area extraction, respectively). Following levels clear‐cutting, particularly red maple tulip poplar. Agricultural abandonment led regardless rates. Synthesis applications . Our findings suggest common use practices native fixer, reduce trees. If fixers likely proliferate disturbance, might maintain cutting low densities applying prescribed fire remove N.

متن کاملHistorical Image Registration and Land-Use Land-Cover Change Analysis
Historical aerial images are important to retain past ground surface information. The land-use land-cover change in the past can be identified using historical aerial images. Automatic historical image registration and stitching is essential because the historical image pose information was usually lost. In this study, the Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) algorithm was used for feature ...
متن کاملRelationships Between land Use and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal (AM) Spore Abundance in Calcareous Soils
This study was conducted to determine soil properties that correlate with the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) spore numbers in semiarid calcareous soils of Hamadan province in northwestern of Iran. Soil samples from six sites managed differently were collected from a 0 to 30 cm depth. The results showed that land use and management systems had a significant effect on AMF spore number in soi...
متن کاملAssessing the Impact of Land Use Changes and Rangeland and Forest Degradation on Flooding Using Watershed Modeling System
Extensive flood damages all over the world necessitate its control and operation. Hydrologic impacts of land use change appear in many ways such as total runoff, and flood peak flow. This study was performed in 2014 and aimed to investigate the impacts of land use changes on the occurrence of floods in the catchment of Boostan dam in Golestan province, Iran. For this purpose, Watershed Modeling...
متن کاملAn analysis of forest land use, forest land cover and change at policy-relevant scales
Quantifying the amount of forest and change in the amount of forest are key to ensure that appropriate management practices and policies are in place to maintain the array of ecosystem services provided by forests. There are a range of analytical techniques and data available to estimate these forest parameters, however, not all ‘forest’ is the same and various components of change have been pr...
